Arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport

Arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport can feel easier when you know what to organise before leaving the terminal. This guide takes you through the main arrival steps, from immigration and baggage collection to getting connected and arranging your onward journey.

1. Keep Your Travel Documents Ready

Before joining the immigration queue, keep your passport and relevant visa or ETA confirmation within easy reach. Save your accommodation address and onward travel details offline so you can find them without an internet connection.

Check the latest entry requirements before departure. Your arrival arrangements should follow the rules that apply to your nationality and visa type.

Once inside the terminal, follow the signs for arrivals and immigration. Allow some flexibility in your plans: queues and baggage delivery times can vary.

2. Collect and Check Your Baggage

Check the baggage displays for your flight and collect your luggage from the assigned belt. Before moving on, check that you have the correct bags and inspect them for visible damage.

If a bag is missing or damaged, report it to your airline or its baggage-handling representative before leaving the baggage area. Keep your baggage receipt and ask for a written report or reference number. BIA provides a mishandled baggage service.

Keep your passport, money, essential medication and valuables in your hand luggage throughout the journey.

3. Pass Through Customs

Passengers with nothing to declare may use the green channel. Entering this channel counts as a declaration that you have nothing to declare, so ask a customs officer if you are unsure about an item.

Check the Sri Lanka Customs traveller guide before packing unusual items or goods that may require declaration. Allowances differ between tourists and residents; do not assume that an allowance you find online applies to every passenger.

4. Get Some Sri Lankan Rupees

Bank counters, currency exchange facilities and ATMs are available at the airport. The airport lists a Bank of Ceylon facility in the arrival public concourse with banking, currency exchange and ATM services, open 24 hours.

Consider obtaining enough Sri Lankan rupees for your first transfer, meals and small purchases.

Before exchanging or withdrawing money:

  • Check the displayed exchange rate and any fees.
  • Read the ATM charges before confirming.
  • Keep your exchange receipt.
  • Ask for some smaller notes where possible.

Avoid carrying all your cash in one place.

5. Arrange Mobile Connectivity

Mobile phone service outlets are available in the arrival lobby.

If you plan to buy a local connection, compare the available packages and ask about:

  • The total price and package validity.
  • How much data is included.
  • Whether local calls are included.
  • Whether your phone supports the offered SIM or eSIM.
  • What identification is required for registration.

Ask the staff to help activate the connection and test it before you leave. If you already have roaming or an eSIM, check that it works before trying to contact your driver or accommodation.

6. Arrange Your Airport Transfer

Choose your transport with your arrival time, luggage and first destination in mind.

Pre-booked Hotel Transfer or Driver

A pre-booked transfer can make arrival simpler, particularly after a long flight or when travelling with children.

Before departure, confirm:

  • Your flight number and arrival date.
  • The meeting point and contact number.
  • The full price and payment method.
  • Whether parking, tolls and waiting time are included.
  • What happens if your flight is delayed.

Verify the driver’s details against your booking before leaving with them.

Airport Taxi

The airport lists a supervised taxi service with counters in the arrival lobby and arrival porch. Confirm the fare to your exact accommodation and ask about any additional charges before starting the journey.

Have your accommodation’s address and map location ready. A hotel name alone may be confusing when several properties have similar names.

Bus to Colombo Fort

The airport website lists the 187 Airport–Colombo Fort bus service. Check the current departure point, operating hours and fare with airport staff before relying on it for your arrival.

Consider how you will travel from the bus’s final stop to your accommodation, especially with large bags or a late arrival.

7. Check Your First-Night Arrangements

Tell your accommodation your expected arrival time and confirm that someone can receive you.

If your flight arrives shortly after midnight, check the booking date carefully. A room booked for that calendar date may only become available at the normal afternoon check-in time. You may need to book the previous night to enter the room immediately.

Avoid making tightly timed onward bookings directly after landing. Leave room for immigration, baggage collection, customs and the journey from the airport.

Before Leaving the Terminal

Take a moment to check that you have:

  • Your passport and travel documents.
  • All your luggage.
  • A way to pay for your transfer.
  • Your accommodation address saved offline.
  • Your driver’s details or a confirmed transport plan.
  • A working phone connection, if needed.

With these essentials organised, you can leave the airport ready for your first stop in Sri Lanka.
