Sri Lanka’s east coast offers beach stays, historic harbour towns, Hindu temples, lagoons and surfing. It is a region worth exploring slowly, with time for local food and life beyond the beachfront.
This guide introduces Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda, Batticaloa and Arugam Bay. They are spread along a substantial stretch of coastline, so choosing the right base matters more than trying to visit every destination.
For help fitting the region into a wider trip, start with our Where to Go in Sri Lanka guide.
When to Visit Sri Lanka’s East Coast
May to September is a useful general starting point for an east coast beach holiday. Conditions vary between destinations and years, with the northeast monsoon bringing wetter weather to the region later in the year.
For surfing, Sri Lanka Tourism describes Arugam Bay’s broader season as April to October. The best conditions for an individual surfer depend on the break, swell and experience level.
Seasonal guidance does not guarantee sunshine, safe swimming or good underwater visibility. Check local conditions before booking water activities.
Our Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka guide explains how the island’s different weather patterns can influence your route.
How Long Should You Stay?
We suggest three to four nights for one main beach base, or seven to ten nights if you want to travel through several parts of the coast.
| Area | Main appeal | Suggested approach |
|---|---|---|
| Trincomalee and Uppuveli | Town sights, temples and nearby beach accommodation | Combine sightseeing with a beach stay |
| Nilaveli | Beach time and access to Pigeon Island excursions | Choose as an alternative base north of Trincomalee |
| Pasikuda | A relaxed stay around the bay | Allow several nights if relaxation is the priority |
| Batticaloa | Lagoon scenery, heritage and everyday town life | Visit from Pasikuda or stay one to two nights |
| Arugam Bay | Surfing and a beach-town atmosphere | Allow several nights, particularly for surf lessons |
These are planning suggestions. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay should not be treated as neighbouring beach stops.
Trincomalee: Harbour Views and Religious Heritage
Trincomalee combines a historic harbour setting with cultural sights and nearby beaches. It can suit travellers who want more variety than a stay focused entirely on a resort.
Visit Koneswaram Temple
Koneswaram is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, situated on Swami Rock overlooking the sea. Its setting and religious importance make it a meaningful stop during a visit to Trincomalee.
Allow time to appreciate the surroundings without rushing worshippers. Dress modestly, remove footwear where required and follow the temple’s current photography and entry instructions.
Read Sri Lanka Travel Etiquette before visiting religious sites.
Explore Kanniya Hot Water Springs
Kanniya Hot Water Springs, around eight kilometres from Trincomalee, offers an inland stop beyond the town’s temples and beaches. The site contains seven closely grouped wells fed by naturally warm spring water, with temperatures varying between them.
The springs are enclosed within constructed wells, so expect a compact visitor site rather than a large thermal pool. Traditionally, visitors draw water in buckets and pour it over themselves. Check the current arrangements before bathing, respect other visitors’ privacy and follow the instructions displayed at the site.
Include Kanniya as a separate stop during your Trincomalee sightseeing day. We suggest allowing around 30–45 minutes at the springs, plus travel time.
Choose Between Town and the Beach
Staying in town can be convenient for sightseeing and transport connections. Uppuveli offers a beach base closer to Trincomalee, while Nilaveli lies farther north. Both feature among the area’s principal beach destinations.
Check your accommodation’s exact location. A property described as being “in Trincomalee” may require a drive to the town centre or the beach you want to visit.
Nilaveli: Beach Time and Pigeon Island
Nilaveli is a useful choice if you want to spend several days near the sea and make occasional outings into Trincomalee.
Keep some time free for beach walks and relaxed meals rather than organising an excursion every day. Ask your accommodation about nearby restaurants and transport if you prefer to explore independently.
Consider a Pigeon Island Excursion
Pigeon Island National Park lies offshore from Nilaveli and is a recognised destination for snorkelling trips. Access involves a boat journey and depends on suitable conditions.
Before booking, confirm what the total price includes: boat transport, park admission, equipment and any guiding. Explain your swimming ability and ask about flotation support.
Follow park instructions, keep clear of coral and avoid touching or feeding marine life. If conditions are unsuitable, leave the excursion for another day rather than treating it as essential.
Pasikuda: A Relaxed Stay Around the Bay
Pasikuda, also written as Pasikudah, is known for its shallow bay and beach accommodation. It is a good option to consider when the main aim is to settle into one place for a few days.
Shallow water still requires care. Check local swimming advice and supervise children closely rather than assuming the whole bay is safe in every condition.
Compare properties by beach access, meal options and transport availability. If you expect to spend much of your time at the accommodation, these details can matter more than being close to a long list of attractions.
Nearby Kalkudah Beach offers another stretch of coastline to explore during your stay.
Batticaloa: Lagoon Scenery and Local Life
Batticaloa adds a town and heritage stop to an east coast beach itinerary. Its lagoon setting is central to the experience, with bridges, waterfront views and neighbourhoods worth exploring at an unhurried pace. Batticaloa Fort is a historic landmark associated with Portuguese construction and later Dutch occupation. Check current access before planning to enter, and allow time to explore the surrounding town as well.
You can visit Batticaloa from Pasikuda or stay overnight if you want more time for local meals and sightseeing.
Ask permission before photographing people, fishing activity or religious ceremonies. For a boat outing, choose an organised operator, confirm life jackets are available and follow local guidance.
Arugam Bay: Surfing on the Southeast Coast
Arugam Bay is the main surfing destination in this guide. Its appeal is strongest if you want several days around surf sessions, beach walks and relaxed meals.
The area has multiple breaks, including Arugam Point and Pottuvil Point, with different characteristics. Do not assume that every well-known surf spot suits beginners.
Choose an instructor who assesses your ability and selects an appropriate location for the day. Ask about group size, equipment, transport and lesson duration before booking.
If you do not surf, consider whether the journey fits your interests. Arugam Bay can still provide a beach stay, but you do not need to include it simply to complete the coastline.
Allow a separate travel day when coming from the Trincomalee area. A short excursion between the two would leave little time to enjoy either destination.
Where to Stay
Choose your base around the kind of visit you want.
| Priority | Base to consider | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Town sights and nearby beaches | Trincomalee or Uppuveli | Distance to the beach, restaurants and transport |
| Beach time with a possible island excursion | Nilaveli | Meal options and transport into Trincomalee |
| A stay centred on your accommodation | Pasikuda | Beach access, pool facilities and meal arrangements |
| Lagoon scenery and town exploration | Batticaloa | Location relative to sights and onward transport |
| Surfing | Arugam Bay | Access to suitable breaks, lesson arrangements and noise |
For a shorter first visit, we suggest choosing either the Trincomalee area or Pasikuda. Add Arugam Bay when surfing is a priority or you have enough time for the longer route.
Getting There and Around
Rail is an option to investigate for reaching Trincomalee or Batticaloa from Colombo. Both routes appear in Sri Lanka Railways’ official reservation information. Check the service operating on your date, available seating and arrival station before booking.
Use the official railway reservation portal and arrange the onward road transfer to your accommodation.
For Arugam Bay, plan a road journey for the final leg. Between coastal bases, compare buses with a prearranged car and driver, allowing time for connections and stops.
Our Getting Around Sri Lanka guide explains the main transport choices.
If combining the coast with Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, plan the sequence before booking accommodation. Travelling onward from the heritage region can avoid an unnecessary return to Colombo.
A Suggested Seven-Night East Coast Stay
This itinerary concentrates on the northern and central parts of the east coast.
| Day | Suggested plan | Overnight base |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Travel to Uppuveli or Nilaveli and settle in | Uppuveli or Nilaveli |
| Day 2 | Explore Trincomalee and visit Koneswaram Temple | Uppuveli or Nilaveli |
| Day 3 | Beach time or a suitable Pigeon Island excursion | Uppuveli or Nilaveli |
| Day 4 | Travel to Pasikuda, leaving time for the transfer | Pasikuda |
| Day 5 | Enjoy a relaxed day around the bay | Pasikuda |
| Day 6 | Visit Batticaloa or arrange an overnight stay there | Pasikuda or Batticaloa |
| Day 7 | Keep a flexible day for local exploring or rest | Pasikuda or Batticaloa |
| Day 8 | Continue your journey | — |
To include Arugam Bay, add a transfer day and several nights there, or replace the Pasikuda portion with a longer surf stay.
Food and Practical Tips
Make time for meals outside your accommodation where practical. Ask about locally prepared rice and curry, string hoppers, pittu and available seafood. Dishes and preparation vary between households and restaurants, so asking what is being cooked that day can be more useful than expecting a fixed menu.
Our Sri Lankan Food: What to Eat on Your First Visit guide introduces familiar dishes and meal options.
Carry sun protection, drinking water and modest clothing for religious visits. Follow local advice before swimming, snorkelling or taking a boat trip.
A rewarding east coast journey does not require every stop. Choose the places that suit your interests, allow for the distances and leave enough time to enjoy each base.
